MARTIAN LANDER CONTEST 2022
For the PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION phase, you will have access to whatever materials I might have in class, but it's IMPORTANT to BRING your own, approved materials.
MATERIALS are DUE in Class on Wednesday, 11-16 for SILVER and 11-17 for BURGUNDY. You MUST bring at least... 1. Tape or glue or string AND 2. Building materials (paper or straws or cardboard, etc...)
Triple-Beam balances, and plastic eggs will be provided for TESTING & OBSERVATION. On the final day we will drop the crafts and conduct a CONCLUSION & ANALYSIS discussion of the winners & losers.
I will need to preview each team’s proposal including the materials you’ve chosen and a sketch of your planned lander. Good luck and please don’t hesitate to ask for my help.
The Basic RULES:
1. The lightest craft to protect the egg wins. ***A cracked egg is a broken egg.
2. All materials used must be pre-approved by me. They must be “raw” materials such as straws (preferably not plastic), tape, glue, rubber bands, string, plastic wrap, popsicle sticks, cardboard, paper, etc…
**Banned materials include balloons, bubble wrap, pre-manufactured containers (no boxes, cups, toilet paper rolls, etc..), sponges (except little pieces used as padding.
3. All construction must take place during class. No outside help is allowed.
4. The craft must be dropped and fall freely – it can’t be slowly lowered, for example.
5. You may not use a landing pad of any kind. The craft must hit the concrete below.
6. A single parachute may be used. It may not be larger than a 16” x 16” square.
*7. Upon landing, each team has up to 1 minute to place the unbroken, clean egg in my hand. You will need to have an “extraction” team on the ground with scissors, etc… If the egg is broken during extraction, the team is disqualified. If it takes longer than 1 minute, the team is disqualified.
8. Teams must use the eggs provided (i.e. you can’t replace your egg with a hard-boiled or drained egg!). Yes, this has been done before!
Good luck. Have fun. Do your best.
